Inside My Artistic Process: The Creative Journey Behind My Mixed Media Art Collection: Breath of Gratitude 2

Creating a mixed media art collection is a deeply immersive process that unfolds over several phases. Each phase requires time, attention to detail, and a lot of heart. Here’s how I bring my vision to life, from initial brainstorming to final delivery, all while balancing life as a mom of two and working late nights and weekends.

Phase 1: Pre-Production

Brainstorm and Conceptualization:
The journey begins with an idea. I spend time brainstorming and sketching concepts, capturing emotions and themes I want to explore. These sketches form the raw foundation of each piece.

Digital Refinement:
Next, I take the sketches to digital platforms like Procreate and Pixelmator. This is where the real magic begins—I refine the design, play with textures, experiment with colours, and fine-tune elements like facial features. Digital tools allow me to test and perfect every detail before moving to the tactile application phase.

Phase 2: Production

Tactile Application:
With the digital design finalized, I transfer the concept onto mixed media paper and begin layering colors and textures.

  • Dark to Light Layers: Starting with 6H pencil, I outline and colour block
  • Watercolor and Acrylic: I add vibrancy and richness, blending colors to bring the piece to life.
  • Shimmer Watercolors: These final touches add a luminous glow to the artwork.
  • Resin: To add a twist I sporadically add a glass-like or water finish.

Each layer builds upon the last, creating a textured, dynamic piece that tells a story.

Phase 3: Post-Production

Finishing Touches:
Once the resin cures, I sign and label the back of each artwork, frame it carefully, and wrap it securely for shipping or display. These final steps are all about presentation, ensuring that each piece is ready to be shared with its new owner.

Phase 4: Partnership and Marketing Campaign with Salvation Army

In this phase, I worked closely with the Salvation Army team to bring the collection to life for the public:

  • Website Updates: I uploaded images of each artwork and developed content for the collection.
  • Gamification: I coded interactive pages to make the experience engaging for visitors, such as treasure-hunt elements tied to the artwork.
  • Content Creation: I drafted blog posts, weaving in poetry and reflections inspired by the collection.
  • Social Media Products and Posts: I develop promotional materials like posts, videos, and reels to share across platforms.

This phase combines creativity with strategy to ensure the collection reaches and resonates with a wide audience.

Over the Course of Phase 1 to Phase 4

During the creation process, I make a conscious effort to step away from social media and website updates. My focus remains entirely on the art itself, ensuring I stay 100% committed to meeting my production goals and delivering the highest quality work.

Behind the Scenes: Balancing Life and Art

It’s important to note that this entire process—from brainstorming in Phase 1 to marketing in Phase 4—happens outside of regular working hours. Late nights, weekends, and stolen moments are when I pour myself into this work, all while raising two kids. Every piece in this collection is the product of passion, dedication, and hard work.

I hope this glimpse into my process offers an appreciation for the time and love poured into each piece.
