Sometimes, inspiration strikes from the most unexpected places—an old favorite, a forgotten treasure, or a chance encounter with the past. For me, it all began when I rediscovered a Salvador Dalí book tucked away on my shelf. It wasn’t just any book; it was accompanied by an original 1960 Dalí print that I had serendipitously found in a used bookstore over 20 years ago. As I flipped through the pages, I found myself mesmerized all over again by the audacious brilliance of Dalí’s sketches, the wild shapes, and the array of textures that brought his surreal visions to life.
That experience sparked something deep within me. Dalí’s unrelenting exploration of the subconscious—his fearless approach to surrealism—was an open invitation to play, to experiment, and to push the boundaries of my own creativity. So, I dove headfirst into the dreamlike world of surrealism, letting the chaos and curiosity guide my paintbrush.
This new collection represents a significant departure from my previous work. I’ve leaned into abstract forms, unexpected textures, and hauntingly vibrant palettes that echo the strange beauty of dreams. Each piece is a mix of bold experimentation and deliberate design, with organic shapes that morph into intricate patterns. My aim is to transport viewers into a space where reality bends and emotions take on new, tangible forms.
One of my favorite pieces so far is featured above—a watercolour that feels alive, with swirling forms and unexpected bursts of colour. The central figure’s gaze is a study in contrasts: wide-eyed wonder paired with a haunting intensity. The elements of dripping paint and ethereal textures give it a feeling of movement, almost as if it’s shifting before your eyes. This piece, like others in the collection, captures the delicate balance between chaos and control, a theme that resonates deeply with my brand, Shaping the Crazy.
What to Expect
The collection will include:
- Mixed-Media Works: Combining watercolour, ink, and digital textures, I’m exploring ways to layer mediums to create depth and intrigue.
- Surreal Portraits: Dreamlike figures with exaggerated features, each telling a story of transformation and self-discovery.
- Abstract Explorations: Pieces where shapes, colours, and textures take centre stage, inviting the viewer to interpret their own meaning.
- Limited-Edition Prints: Selected works from the collection will be available as high-quality prints, perfect for adding a touch of surrealism to your space.
Behind the Scenes
Creating this collection has been both exhilarating and challenging. Surrealism demands that you let go of control—to embrace the unexpected and allow your subconscious to lead. As someone who often finds peace in structure and planning, this has been a liberating journey. I’ve discovered that some of the best ideas come from letting the paint spill, smudge, and flow where it wants to.
